It is important to know where to seek help if you or someone close to you becomes ill, feels unwell or is injured. In most cases, your health centre should be your first choice.
Medical advice over the phone
If you are not sure who you should talk to, you can call the medical advice service on 1177. The nurses at the advice service can give you guidance and direct you to the best place to get help – whether that is an urgent care centre, an Accident and Emergency department at a hospital, or your health centre. You can phone 1177 twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
Your health centre
Your health centre is the first choice for both temporary illnesses, long-term conditions and mental health problems. You should contact your health centre if you have a high fever, a skin or urinary tract infection, a respiratory infection, sudden worsening of a chronic condition, wounds or an acute rash, for example. Your health centre can also assess and treat any mental health problems you may be experiencing. Your health centre is open during the daytime on weekdays. A number of health centres also offer extended opening hours in the evenings and at weekends.
You can register with one of our health centres and be assigned a named doctor who is responsible for your care. You will then be covered by the healthcare guarantee.
Urgent care
The urgent care centre can treat adults and children of all ages for acute illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening. We offer a walk-in service, and you can visit to us no matter where you live. You must always phone 112 if your life is in danger.
